Empowering Kids to Change the World

A Presentation by Case Avenue Elementary School

Case Avenue Elementary School held a school-wide assembly on Friday, May 10, 2013 entitled “Empowering Kids to Change the World.”  The idea behind the school-wide initiative provided kids the opportunity to make a positive difference in their school, community and the world through service-learning projects.

Inspired by the book, “We Dream of a World”, written and illustrated by students in Missouri, Case Avenue students (K-6) took on the challenge to complete service-learning projects and then presented them at the assembly. The projects  focused on specific themes of the book including hunger, homelessness, staying healthy, education, pollution, the environment, endangered species, and peace.  Several area organizations attended the event, in addition to the Northwest All-Star Panthers, PA State Representative Mark Longietti and Sharon High Alumni and former NFL player, Marlin Jackson.  For additional details and photos of the event, please click here.

Slippery Rock University Partnership Engages Students with Engineering

Slippery Rock University field students recently held an event that engaged second grade students and their parents in an activity that brought out the engineering and problem-solving skills in all that participated. The workshop was held at each of the three elementary schools.  Students created "puff mobiles" from very simple supplies: sheet of paper, straws, life savers and tape.  After an inspection, students raced their mobiles.  The top 3 racers received medals and all students received a goody bag and paperback books on forces and motion.  There was also a drawing for door prizes that were followed by refreshments to conclude the workshop.  Thanks to our partners at Slippery Rock University for this opportunity!
